[Open-source] Enterprise-level application development full-stack framework, enterprise-level low-code platform, rapid development platform

1. Project Overview

Jmix is a collection of libraries and tools that can speed up the development process of data-centric Spring Boot applications. Jmix provides many out-of-the-box features, including advanced system functions for complex data security and auditing, as well as business functions similar to report engines or business process execution engines, which can be introduced with just a few lines of code.

Reduce the cost and time of business system development

Find a rapid application development platform for your digital vision, without low-code platform restrictions, no vendor dependencies, and no pay-per-user fees.

4. Feature Overview

Jmix is a high-level framework for enterprise-level web application development. Equipped with advanced development tools and rich functional modules.

Jmix is most suitable for building data-centric applications with complex data models and rich user interfaces. In a sense, it is a full-stack framework that can provide support for creating both the backend and UI of an application.

Jmix is based on Spring Boot, which is the de facto standard for creating enterprise-level Java web applications. This means that, in addition to using the features provided by Jmix, you can use many third-party libraries and frameworks with minimal configuration.

Jmix Studio is a plugin for IntelliJ IDEA that can provide you with help throughout the entire application development cycle: creating and configuring projects, defining data models, generating database scripts, and developing UI interfaces in a visual editor. It also provides advanced code navigation, auto-completion, and hinting for Jmix projects.

5. Tech Stack

Architecture Overview

Here, we use the C4 model representation to show a bird's-eye view of the Jmix architecture.

Container

First, we divide a typical information system built with Jmix into different containers. Here, the container refers to a unit that can be run or deployed independently, responsible for executing code or storing data.

As can be seen, the main part of the system includes a web application running on the JVM and a relational database. The web application is based on Spring Boot and supports Java or Kotlin programming. The relational database is used to store Jmix subsystem data (e.g., security settings) and is the primary data storage for the application.

Jmix application can connect to multiple additional data storage and supports using the file system or cloud environment as an independent file storage. In addition, Jmix also supports integrating Elasticsearch to implement full-text search functionality for application data, supports external authentication and single sign-on (SSO) through OIDC services.

Jmix application provides a web interface, the interface uses the Jmix UI subsystem created by Java/Kotlin and XML.

You can also create a standalone front-end application, connect to the Jmix backend through the Jmix REST API or create your own interface. The front-end application here is not within the scope of Jmix, you can choose any technology to build it.

Components

We go further into the Jmix container to understand its internal components.

Jmix application always contains dependencies on Spring Boot and other Jmix subsystems. Jmix has two types of subsystems:

  • Core subsystems provide system-level functionality and are included in most projects.
  • Extension components are optional subsystems that can be added to a project as needed. Extension components are published on the Jmix market.

Technically, core subsystems and extension components are organized in the same way. Subsystems contain one or more functional modules and corresponding Spring Boot starters, packaged in JAR file format. Subsystems can depend on other subsystems, for example, many interface-containing extension components depend on the core UI subsystem.

Using Jmix

Download Jmix Studio - an IntelliJ IDEA plugin. It can provide help at all stages of application development: creating and configuring projects, defining data models, generating database scripts, and developing interfaces using a visual editor. It also provides Jmix projects with advanced navigation, code completion, and code review features.

Follow the quick start guide to set up and run a project in 15 minutes. The guide shows what needs to be done when creating any web application: designing models, maintaining data, creating business logic, and creating user interfaces.

Building from source code

  • Access to One Flying Open-source: https://code.exmay.com/ Download
  • Install JDK 8.
  • Build and publish framework modules to local Maven :
  • cd jmix ./gradlew publishToMavenLocal
  • If you want to build Jmix Gradle plugin, Studio template or framework localization translation, execute in corresponding directory ./gradlew publishToMavenLocal :
  • jmix-gradle-plugin - For building Jmix application Gradle plugin.
  • jmix-build - An internal Gradle plugin encapsulating framework build logic, not used when building application.
  • jmix-templates - Project template used in Studio new project wizard.
  • jmix-translations - Framework translation .
