[Open Source] A Cloud-Native Multi-Cloud Application Management Platform Supporting Multiple Kubernetes Clusters

1. Project Overview

Cloudpods is an open-source cloud platform implemented in Golang. It is a cloud-native platform that integrates multiple clouds and hybrid cloud environments—in other words, a "cloud of clouds." Cloudpods can manage not only local virtual machines and physical machine resources but also multiple cloud platforms and cloud accounts. It abstracts the differences in data models and APIs across these heterogeneous infrastructure resources and exposes a unified API, allowing users to access multiple clouds as easily as a single cloud. This significantly reduces the complexity of multi-cloud access and improves multi-cloud management efficiency.

4. Feature Overview

Who Needs Cloudpods?

  • Virtualize several physical servers to create a private cloud platform.
  • Need a compact yet relatively comprehensive full-lifecycle management tool for physical servers.
  • Convert a VMware vSphere virtualization cluster into a self-service private cloud platform.
  • Access private and public clouds through a single interface in hybrid cloud environments.
  • Access multiple accounts distributed across multiple public cloud platforms through a centralized entry point.
  • Currently using only one public cloud account but planning to adopt multi-cloud in the future.

Multi-cloud resource management, supporting most mainstream cloud platforms, including private clouds such as OpenStack and public clouds such as AWS, Azure, GCP, Alibaba Cloud, Huawei Cloud, and Tencent Cloud.

A lightweight private cloud capable of managing massive numbers of KVM virtual machines.

A bare-metal cloud providing full lifecycle management of physical servers.

A comprehensive multi-tenant authentication and access control system.

Self-service and automation for VMware vSphere virtualization clusters.

SSO that allows unified federated identities to access the native consoles of individual cloud platforms.

A comprehensive and consistent set of REST APIs and models for accessing the above cloud resources and features.

A multi-cloud image service that automatically converts images into formats required by different cloud platforms.

Supported Cloud Platforms

  • Public Clouds: AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform, Alibaba Cloud, Huawei Cloud, Tencent Cloud, UCloud, China Telecom Cloud, China Mobile Cloud, JD Cloud
  • Private Clouds: OpenStack, ZStack, Alibaba Cloud Aspara (Alibaba Feitian), Huawei HCSO, Nutanix
  • Local Infrastructure Resources: KVM, VMware vSphere vCenter/ESXi, Bare Metal (IPMI, Redfish API), Object Storage (MinIO, Ceph, XSky), NAS (Ceph)

Supported Cloud Resources

  • Servers: instances, disks, network interfaces, networks, vpcs, storages, hosts, wires, snapshots, snapshot policies, security groups, elastic IPs, SSH keypairs, images
  • Load Balancers: instances, listeners, backend groups, backends, TSL certificates, ACLs
  • Object Storage: buckets, objects
  • NAS: file_systems, access_groups, mount_targets
  • RDS: instances, accounts, backups, databases, parameters, privileges
  • Elastic Cache: instances, accounts, backups, parameters
  • DNS: DNS zones, DNS records
  • VPC: VPCs, VPC peering, inter-VPC network, NAT gateway, DNAT/SNAT rules, route tables, route entries

5. Tech Stack

Quick Start

You can install Cloudpods on a Linux host with at least 8 GiB of memory and 100 GB of disk space in just three simple steps. (CentOS 7 and Debian 10 have been thoroughly tested.)

(The following instructions assume that the host's IP address is 10.168.26.216)

1. Configure Passwordless SSH Login

# Generate an SSH key pair
# (Skip this step if ~/.ssh/id_rsa and ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub already exist. Make sure the private SSH key is not password-protected.)
$ ssh-keygen -t rsa -N ''
# Copy the generated SSH public key ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub to the target deployment host
$ ssh-copy-id -i ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub root@10.168.26.216
# Test whether passwordless SSH login is working. Log in to the target host without a password and execute the hostname command.
# If configured successfully, the following command will return the hostname of the target host.
# No password for the target host is required.
$ ssh root@10.168.26.216 "hostname"

2. Install Git and Related Tools

Install Git and the EPEL Repository on CentOS 7

yum install -y git epel-release ansible

Install Git on Debian 10

apt install -y git ansible

3. Install Cloudpods

Run the following command to start installing Cloudpods:

See the README.md documentation for details.
